This week we love...

Jura F50

Jura_F50This week we love Jura's F50 coffee machine.

One of the best all-round coffee machines we've seen in a long time.

If this successful classic amongst JURA automatic speciality coffee machines was good before, it's now even better.

Thanks to four programmable preparation buttons and improved user guidance with the Rotary Switch, it has never been easier to create the perfect coffee. Decide how you want your coffee and fall under the spell of the amber cup illumination during its preparation. Bean-to-cup coffee has never been this easy (or this good...).

Coffee making a difference

Starbucks_in_ChinaWe love the fact that people in the coffee industry are giving back to society and helping wherever they can.

The world has somewhat forgotten the horror of the Japan earthquake and tsunami, but it's good to hear that Starbucks are doing their bit to alleviate the pain and suffering of some of the victims.

As part of its long-term dedication to the relief and recovery efforts following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, Starbucks Coffee Japan today announced the establishment of the Starbucks CUP Fund (Caring Unites Partners). Affected partners (employees) in Japan will be eligible to receive cash grants based on their needs and situation. Established with the help of a personal donation of US$1 million by Howard and Sheri Schultz, the CUP Fund will continue on and provide support for partners in the future as well.

The CUP Fund, which currently operates in the U.S., Canada and China, was inspired and created by a group of partners in 1999. The program empowers partners to help other partners experiencing significant hardship due to catastrophic circumstances beyond their control, including natural disasters. All partners are eligible to apply for assistance. This program is funded solely by partner contributions and fundraising activities.

Howard Schultz, chairman, president and ceo, Starbucks Coffee Company, joined Starbucks Coffee Japan leaders today in Sendai, the area most impacted by the earthquake and tsunami. Schultz met with partners from 52 stores in the area to announce the formation of the CUP Fund in Japan.

"Our partners remain at the heart of our business," said Schultz. "Initiatives like the CUP Fund are part of our core values as a company. As we celebrate our 15th anniversary in Japan, I'm proud to continue our tradition of bringing together people in communities where we do business."

"This type of fund has never existed in Japan before and we are proud to be a part of it," said Mr. Tokukawa, director, Starbucks CUP Fund Japan. "The grants generated will be allocated to impacted partners starting in December, which will be most helpful during the holiday season. Partners will be able to directly aid their fellow partners in rebuilding their lives after the disaster."

The Starbucks Foundation and Starbucks Coffee Japan contributed JPY 100 million (US$1.2 million) to the Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan. As a company, Starbucks has used its store footprint around the world to help customers support donations to the Red Cross and other relief organizations. To date, Red Cross donations through stores in the U.S. and Canada have generated more than US$280,000.

Hario Ceramic Coffee Dripper

Hario_Ceramic_Coffee_DripperThis week we love the Harion Ceramic Coffee Dripper.

If you want to enjoy great filter coffee at home, one cup at a time, this is for you.

The 60° angle of the cone, the inner spiral ribs, and the large hole at the bottom optimize the extraction of flavours from the coffee. You can vary the taste of coffee by adjusting the flow of water. For lighter taste - pour quickly, for depth of flavor - pour more slowly. This size dripper prepares a single cup of brewed coffee and is handcrafted from white ceramic. We recommend you use Hario filters for the coffee drippers.

Handcrafted by Hario Glass in Japan since 1921.

Available from Bean There for about R250 each.

The Virtuoso Grinder

Baratza_GrinderThis week we love the Virtuoso grinder from Bean There. We all know the importance of grinding your beans correctly, and in order to achieve this you would need to invest in a good grinder.

The Virtuoso™ Grinder was introduced in December 2005 and it has many winning features; commercial grade components, high performance, and sleek style. The Virtuoso™ includes commercial grade conical burrs, a 480 watt DC motor, a new shape, and a beautiful brushed-satin metal top.

Detailed Product Features:

Commercial Grade Conical Burrs

Manufactured in Italy, the Virtuoso’s™ 44mm grinding burrs are the same material and durability as the industry’s highest-quality line of commercial conical burr coffee grinders. Conical burr grinders are exceptional at producing consistent grinds from very fine to coarse, as well as being durable and will remain sharp for many years. The burrs have a precision mounting system to ensure a stable platform for accurate grinding.

Grind Coffee For Any Brewing Method

There are many coffee grinders on the market. However, few have the ability to grind fine enough for a professional espresso machine and coarse enough for a press pot. The Virtuoso™ has 40 steps of adjustment. Choose the perfect setting by turning the bean hopper to the desired position.

Innovative Calibration

Commercial grinders have a calibration system to ensure that the grinder will grind fine enough for espresso and has the range to grind coarse enough for press pot. This feature is available in the Virtuoso™. The grinders are calibrated when they are manufactured to ensure an accurate range of grind. If necessary the grinders can be user calibrated.

DC Motor

The powerful, high torque 480 watt DC motor effortlessly drives the burrs. This motor turns slowly resulting in cool, quiet operation and permits long grinding duty-cycles. The circuitry is equipped with an automatically resetting, thermal cutoff switch.

Unique Speed Control

The Virtuoso™ uses a combination of gear and electronic speed reduction to control the rotation of the burr to 450 RPM. The electronic speed controller is adjustable from 405 to 495 RPM in the event that specific user conditions require modification of the speed. This slow speed reduces heat, noise, and static generation in the grinder. It also ensures that the beans feed smoothly into the burrs.

Timers switch and Pulse button

The Virtuoso™ has a sixty second timer, with segmented graphics, for easily repeatable grind times. It also has a front mounted pulse button that manually controls the on/off function. This is nice if you wish to grind a small amount of coffee for espresso.

Pulse button makes Espresso Easy

If you have an espresso machine, you will enjoy the convenience of being able to grind directly into the filter basket for your machine. After you remove the coffee grounds bin, you can insert your filter basket (portafilter) directly under the dispensing chute to collect the coffee as it is being dispensed. You can push the pulse button with your thumb while holding the filter basket for true one hand operation.

Easy to Clean

One important and often overlooked task required of owning a good coffee grinder is routine cleaning. To clean the Virtuoso™, just remove the coffee been hopper to expose the grinding chamber. At this point the outer ring burr simply lifts out. The entire grinding chamber can then be thoroughly cleaned in a few minutes.

Service & Support

One year warranty. If your grinder has a problem we will see if we can resolve it over the website or phone or will promptly send a replacement grinder and a return tag for your old one.

Priced at R2400.00. Locally available from Bean There.
