The recent KZN Barista Championship held at the Pavilion Shopping Centre in Durban was a true reflection of the talent in the province. 34 barista’s from all over Kwa Zulu Natal competed for a place in next year’s finals where the South African barista champion for 2011 will be crowned. This barista will then go on to represent South Africa at the world championships in Colombia.

Judges and contestants alike agreed that the standards in KZN were exceptionally high this year. The competition also attracted a large number of first time entrants which is a positive sign for the coffee industry in the province.

After 3 days of pouring, tamping, grinding and tasting there could only be one winner: Travis Scott. A first time entrant representing Woolworths/Tribeca, Travis did enough to impress the judges and secure the coveted title. Hot on his heels was one of last year’s finalists, Pauline Leschinsky from Ciro Beverage Solutions followed by Craig Charity from Go Coffee in third place. 4th, 5th and 6th place went to Samantha Moodley, Dirk Maritz and Azhar Khan respectively.

Well done to all baristas who entered, you guys made this championship one to remember!
