Cappuccinos_logoCappuccino’s became one of the first restaurant groups in the country to launch single estate filter coffee. This premium coffee is sourced from a farm in Guatemala. This smooth and bright coffee has a rich aroma, plenty of flavour including nutty, milk chocolate, spice, raisins and plum. This coffee is pleasing, complex and sweet. They also offer 250g retail packs for sale in store.

Cappuccino's also recently opened their 14th store, situated on the upper level of the Clearwater Mall. It has panoramic views, with lots of natural light and a spacious smoking section. Open from 08h00 daily, the store is fast becoming a local favourite.

Beaver_Creek_SignNot many people know about the gem that is Beaver Creek Coffee Estate. Situated on the foothills overlooking Port Edward (KZN), Beaver Creek farm was bought in 1984 by Ed Cumming, with the first coffee crop planted in 1986. Three years later Ed and Doug harvested their first crop of Arabica coffee.

More than 20 years later, this small family concern has grown into a thriving roastery and now produces some of the finest coffees available. Supplying supermarkets, restaurants and distributing via mail order through the Coffee of the Month Club (operated by the Wine of the Month Club), both their wide range of imports and their own brand (Beaver Creek Estate Reserve) continue to enjoy a favourable reception.

So if you are planning a holiday down to KZN this December, be sure to pop in at Beaver Creek to experience a coffee tour second to none. The farm also boasts a small coffee shop and retail store with lovely home made goodies for sale.

Origin_logoJoanne_BerryOrigin Coffee Roasters recently added the drink that won Joanne Berry the "best signature drink" title at the Cape Town Barista Championships to their menu. It's an intersting combination of ingredients to say the least, but it was this combination that helped her clinch the title of Cape Town's best barista.

The drink is called "Caferrado" and is based on a traditional Mexican hot chocolate.  It's a thick and sweet drink made from double espresso, masa harina (the traditional corn based thickening agent for atole), jaggery (unrefined sugar still rich with molasses common in India and South America), cinnamon and vanilla paste. At the competition Joanne served it in espresso cups and saucers made out of sugar. The drink at Origin is served in normal cups as the sugar cups were a once-off master piece created by Origins chef, Ilse, especially for the competition.

Two other Origin competitors' drinks were also added to the menu. A drink called "Delightfully Turkish" by Cherise and the "Dark Latin" created by Sandy.

Available from Origin Coffee Roastery at 28 Hudson Street, De Waterkant, Cape Town.

Dulce_LogoDulce_Look_1Local coffee shop franchise, Dulce Cafe, recently launched its new "look and feel". This forms part of the company's strategy to implement a change or upgrade of the store design every 5 or so years, thereby staying ahead of the competition and also ensuring that the stores remain attractive for landlords and customers alike.

This new design will be rolled out in all new store builds, and existing Dulce Café stores will be encouraged to revamp to this new look at a time suitable to the Franchisee and Landlord.

Lamborghini_Coffee_MachineWhen somebody recently informed the Joburg Coffee Club about an amazing "Lamborghini" espresso machine they came across on a recent trip to Italy, we were sceptical. A Lamborghini espresso machine? Well, turns out it's true.

These machines were apparently released about 3 years ago and only a limited number (1000) were manufactured. The machine uses a single dose pod system and all the controls are finished in chrome. The Lamborghini logo is engraved on the front stainless steel panel and the lever which operates the brewing system is an exact replica of the iconic Lamborghini gear stick.

With a price tag of $1750 (about R12 250), it's not as expensive as we thought it would be, considering the brand's premium position in the market. We are however not convinced about the machines actual coffee making abilities. At the end of the day it is a Lamborghini after all, and it should be a great conversation starter when friends come over. Coffee anyone? Please excuse me while I take my Lambo for a spin...
